Frank There is nothing like Heirloom tomatoes, and yes they are truly history, each one with a special story. Once you plant a few heirlooms you will be tearing out your lawn to plant more, or a friend's lawn. I know in NYC no lawns but I know you can buy them at the Famer's Markets in NYC. Some of the best tomatoes are grown in upstate NY. That is where Dr. Carolyn Male, tomato expert does her growing and seed saving. She is the author of 100 Heirloom Tomatoes for the American Garden writen for Smith & Hawkens. BTW Gary Ibsen's book, The Great Tomato Book on tomatoes is excellent. It includes many wonderful tomato recipes.
