Original White Sauce Recipe
Ingredients
4 tbsp (60 ml) butter
5 tbsp (75 ml) flour
5 cups (1.2 L) hot milk
1 onion, studded with 1 clove
1/4 tsp (1 ml) nutmeg
Salt and white pepper
Directions
Heat butter in large saucepan.
When melted, add flour and mix well.
Cook 2 minutes over low heat stirring constantly.
Whisk in half of milk.
Incorporate remaining milk and season.
Drop in onion, stir in nutmeg and bring to boil.
Cook sauce 8 to 10 minutes over low heat, stirring occasionally.
