Rub the butter or margarine into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
Stir in the ground walnuts, then bind the mixture to a fairly firm dough with the egg and water.
Knead lightly, then roll out the dough on a floured board into a rectangle measuring about 26 x 32cm/10 x 12 1/2 in.
Trim the edges, then cut the rectangle into 6'Cm/21/2 in squares.
Prick each biscuit evenly with a fork, brush with water and sprinkle with the salt.
Bake the walnut wheatmeal crackers in a moderately hot oven (190C, 375 F, gas 5) for about 15-20 minutes, or until lightly browned.
Remove the hot biscuits from the trays and transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
