Ingredients

 
1/2 pound butter
 
4 cups sifted all-purpose flour
 
4 egg yolks
 
1 tablespoon heavy cream
 
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar
 
2 teaspoons vanilla
 
Vanilla Glaze

Directions

Cut the butter into the flour using a pastry blender.
Beat the egg yolks with the cream, sugar, and vanilla until very thick.
Stir into the flour mixture, then knead with your hands to form a smooth dough which does not stick to your fingers.
Break off small pieces of dough (about a rounded teaspoonful).
Roll out on a lightly floured board into pencil-like strips about 7 inches long.
Pull the ends as if to make a ring, but overlap to form a pretzel shape.
Press the ends lightly.
Arrange an inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Let stand overnight uncovered at room temperature.
Bake in a 350° oven for 10 to 12 minutes, or until delicately browned at the edges.
Ice while warm with Vanilla Glaze.
