Ingredients
3 eggs, beaten
1/3 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1/4 cup cold milk
2 cups milk, scalded
2 tablespoons butter
2 slices white bread, one-quarter inch thick
Directions
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
Combine eggs, sugar, salt, vanilla and cold milk.
Stir in the hot milk.
Pour into a buttered one-quart casserole.
Butter one side of bread and place over top of custard, buttered side up, just before placing in the oven.
Place in a pan of hot water.
Bake until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean, about one hour.
