1/2 cup red or white wine or nonfat chicken broth
 
1/2 cup chopped onion
 
3 1/2 cups chopped fresh or low-sodium canned tomatoes
 
3/4 teaspoon ground oregano leaves
 
3/4 teaspoon ground basil leaves
 
1 clove garlic, minced
 
1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

Heat the wine or broth in a large saucepan over medium heat.
Add the onions.
Cook and stir over medium heat until tender.
Add more liquid if necessary during this process.
Add the tomatoes, oregano, basil, garlic, and pepper.
Bring to a boil.
Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 35 minutes.
