Recipe Story

Back home, my grandma prepares this thakkali thokku and sends in bottles. I thought it would be difficult to get the exact taste and texture. But now, i decided to give a try. Amazingly it came out very well.

Ingredients

1. Ripe Red Tomatoes - 2,

2. Garlic cloves - 5,

3. Tamarind paste - 1 tsp,

4. Red chilli powder - 3 tsp(as per taste),

5. Turmeric powder - 1 tsp,

6. Fenugreek seeds - 1/2 tsp,

7. Asefeotida - 1 tsp,

8. Mustard seeds - 1 tsp,

9. Gingerly oil - 5 tsp,

10. Salt - as per taste.

Directions

1. Grind the tomatoes with tamarind paste in to a fine paste without any lumps and keep aside.
2. Roast the fenugreek and asefeotida with a tsp oil and crush in to fine powder.
3. Heat 2 tsp oil in kadai, splutter the mustard, add the garlic and saute for 2mins(dont let it to brown), add the tomato paste, cover and let it boil in medium heat.
4. When the thokku gets little thick, add the turmeric powder, red chilli powder, fenugreek powder and salt and mix well. If needed add a tsp oil and again cover, simmer and boil for 5mins.
5. Now uncover, give a stir and adjust taste, boil till the oil floates on sides and thokku consistency is reached.
6. Store in an airtight container and relish!

Tastes great with Curd rice, dosa, idli, chappati.
