Swiss Bratwurst Melt Recipe
Ingredients
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
4 teaspoons all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
3/4 cup milk
3/4 cup shredded process Swiss cheese (3 ounces)
1 8-ounce can sauerkraut
4 cooked bratwurst links
4 large slices pumpernickel bread, toasted
4 slices tomato
Green pepper rings
Ground nutmeg (optional)
Directions
Melt butter or margarine in small-saucepan.
Stir in flour, salt, and dry mustard; add milk.
Cook.and stir till thickened and bubbly.
Stir in cheese till melted; cover and keep warm.
Heat sauerkraut in small saucepan.
Meanwhile, halve bratwurst lengthwise; place, cut side down, on broiler pan or baking sheet.
Broil 3 to 5 inches from heat for 3 minutes.
Drain sauerkraut.
For each sandwich place 2 bratwurst halves on a bread slice.
Top with a fourth of the hot sauerkraut and 1 tomato slice; spoon a fourth of the cheese sauce over.
Garnish with a green pepper ring and sprinkle with a dash of ground nutmeg, if desired
