Swiss Bratwurst Melt Recipe
Ingredients
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
4 teaspoons all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup milk
3/4 cup shredded Swiss cheese(3 ounces)
1 8-ounce can sauerkraut, drained
4 fully cooked bratwurst, Polish sausage, frankfurters, or smoked sausage links
4 slices pumpernickel bread
4 slices tomato
Directions
Preheat broiler.
In small saucepan melt butter or margarine.
Stir in flour, mustard, and salt.
Add milk; cook and stir till thickened and bubbly.
Stir in cheese till melted; fold in sauerkraut.
Cover; keep warm over low heat.
Halve sausages lengthwise.
Broil, cut side down, 3 to 5 inches from heat for 2 to 3 minutes.
Meanwhile, toast bread in toaster.
To assemble sandwich, place 2 sausage halves on each bread slice.
Top each with a tomato slice.
Spoon one-fourth of the cheese sauce over each.
Garnish with green pepper rings, if desired.
