Ingredients

 2 cups homemade vegetable or chicken broth
 Bay leaf1 , crushed
 Salt To Taste
 1 cup picked-over and washed dried lentils, yellow or green split peas, or Mack-eyed peas
 Garlic1 Clove (5gm), finely chopped
 Ground cloves1/8 Teaspoon
 Nutmeg1/8 Teaspoon, grated
 Vegetable oil3 Tablespoon
 Apple cider3 Tablespoon
 Cider vinegar3 Tablespoon
 3 tablespoons brown sugar, molasses, or honey

Directions

1. Bring the broth to a boil in a kettle and add the bay leaf, salt, and lentils. Cover and simmer gently for 30 minutes.
2. Add the remaining ingredients. Stir to mix well and cook for 5 minutes, or until the lentils are tender.
