Directions

Combine dates, water, 1/2 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon lemon juice and walnuts in small bowl.
Set aside.
Cream butter or margarine in mixing bowl; add brown sugar gradually and combine until light and fluffy.
Add egg and mix well.
Stir in 1 teaspoon lemon juice and vanilla.
Combine flour, baking soda and salt; sift into creamed mixture.
Blend well.
Chill dough thoroughly.
Divide in half and roll each portion into rectangle 1/4 inch thick on floured pastry cloth.
Spread with date mixture.
Roll up as for jelly roll and refrigerate until firm.
Preheat oven to 400°.
Grease cooky sheets.
Place each roll on board and cut into thin slices with electric knife.
Bake on prepared cooky sheets 8-10 minutes.
