Ingredients
1/2 cup shortening
1/3 cup sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 teaspoons finely shredded orange peel
1 tablespoon orange juice or water
1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon salt
3 ounces semisweet chocolate, finely shredded
1/4 cup finely chopped walnuts
Directions
1 In a large mixing bowl beat shortening and sugar until light. Beat in egg, orange peel, and orange juice or water.
2 In a small mixing bowl combine flour, soda, and salt; add to beaten mixture. Mix well. Stir in chocolate and nuts. Shape into a 10-inch-long log. Wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour or until firm enough to slice.
3 Using a thin-bladed knife, cut dough into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Place on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake in a 350° oven 10 to 12 minutes or until edges are firm. Cool on wire racks.
