Ingredients

1/4 cup milk

1/4 cup sugar

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 tablespoon active dry yeast

2 tablespoons warm water (105°-115°F)

1 egg

1/2 tablespoon lemon juice

1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon ground allspice

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 - 1 1/2 cups flour

1/3 cup slivered almonds

Confectioners' Icing

Whole almonds, if desired

Directions

1 Heat milk, sugar, butter, and salt to warm (105°-115°F). Dissolve yeast in warm water. Set aside for 5 minutes.
2 Combine yeast mixture, milk mixture, egg, lemon juice, nutmeg, allspice, and cinnamon. Add 1 cup flour and slivered almonds. Mix thoroughly.
3 Add enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. Knead on lightly floured surface until smooth€”about 10 minutes.
4 Place in greased bowl, turning to coat top. Cover; let rise in warm place until double€”about 1 hour.
5 Punch down dough. Divide into thirds. Make 3 ropes and braid. Place on greased baking sheet.
6 Let rise in warm place until almost double€”about 30 minutes. Bake in a preheated 350°F oven 35€”40 minutes or until done.
7 Cool on wire rack. Frost with Confectioners' Icing. If desired, decorate with almonds.
