Ingredients

 
11/2 lb. ground beef
 
11ge. onion, chopped
 
4 Ige. potatoes, cubed
 
4 carrots, sliced
 
1/2 head cabbage, shredded
 
4 c. tomatoes
 
1/2 bay leaf
 
1/4 tsp. thyme
 
Salt and pepper to taste
 
1/4 c. rice

Directions

Saute ground beef and onion in small amount of fat in Dutch oven; drain off fat.
Add 4 cups water, pota- toes, carrots, cabbage, tomatoes, bay leaf, thyme, salt and pepper.
Bring to a boil; add rice.
Reduce heat; cover.
Simmer for 2 hours.
Add water as needed during first 30 minutes.
