Ingredients
1 cup cornmeal
1 cup rye flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup butter or vegetable oil
1 1/2 cups water
1 cup raisins
Directions
1. Mix the cornmeal, rye flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and spices together.
2. Put the sugar, butter, water, and raisins in a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Remove from the heat and cool.
3. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
4. Stir the dry ingredients into mixture in saucepan. Turn into an oiled 9- by 5- by 3-inch loaf pan.
5. Bake for 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
6. Let stand in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out on a rack to cool.
