1) In a sauce, add tomato juice, garlic powder, onion, chili powder, barbecue spices, vinegar, peppers, thyme and basil.
2) Combine the mixture and place over heat to simmer, uncovered, for about 35 minutes. Scoop out peppers, if desired.
3) Add mushrooms to the mixture.
4) Continue cooking until the volume reduces to 1/2 its original volume.
5) Season the sauce with sweetener and salt.

6) Use the spiced mushroom sauce to baste the baked chicken. If used for barbecuing, simmer mushrooms with the sauce kept aside for serving with the chicken.
