Spiced Beef Recipe

Ingredients
1 2 1/2- to 3-pound beef arm or blade pot roast (bone in)
1 14 1/2-ounce can tomatoes, cut up
1/4 cup white wine vinegar
1 clove garlic, minced
1/4 teaspoon pepper
6 whole cloves
2 teaspoons pickling spice
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
Directions
1 In a large skillet or kettle brown roast on both sides in 1 tablespoon hot cooking oil over medium-high heat. Drain well.
2 In a bowl combine undrained tomatoes, the vinegar, 1/4 cup water, garlic, and pepper. Pour over meat. Tie spices in a 6-inch square of 100 percent-cotton cheesecloth. Add to skillet. Bring mixture to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, covered, for 2 to 2 1/2 hours until meat is tender.
3 Transfer meat to a warm platter. Skim fat from cooking liquid. Discard spice bag. Measure cooking liquid; add water, if necessary, to measure 2 cups liquid. In a bowl stir the flour into 1/4 cup cold water. Gradually stir into liquid. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly; cook and stir 1 minute more
