Directions
Stir shortening just to soften.
Sift in flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, soda, and spices.
Add brown sugar and buttermilk.
Mix till all flour is dampened.
Then beat vigorously 2 minutes.
Add eggs and beat 2 minutes longer.
Bake in 2 paper-lined 9x1 1/2-inch round pans at 350° 30 to 35 minutes.
Cool.
Frost with Brown-sugar Frosting.
