Southern Brownies Recipe

Ingredients
3 tablespoons shortening
2 ounces (2 squares) unsweetened chocolate
2 egg yolks, well beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup chopped nuts
2 egg whites
Directions
1. Melt shortening and chocolate together in a large saucepan; cool.
2. Stir in egg yolks, then extract, sugar, flour, and nuts.
3. Beat egg whites until stiff, not dry, peaks are formed. Blend into chocolate mixture.
4. Spread batter in a well-greased 8 x 8 x 2-inch pan.
5. Bake at 350°F 30 minutes, or until a wooden pick comes out clean.
6. Cool completely before cutting.
