1 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups molasses
1/4 cup sugar
4 cups sifted flour
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons soda
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons ginger
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1 egg

How to make Soft Molasses Cookies

Melt shortening in a saucepan large enough for mixing dough.
Stir in molasses and sugar and cool.
Sift together flour, salt, soda, cinnamon, ginger and cloves.
Mix a small amount of flour into shortening mixture.
Beat in egg.
Add remaining flour and blend until smooth.
Chill dough about 2 hours.
Shape into lVi-inch balls.
Place on baking sheets about 2 inches apart.
Bake in a moderate oven (350° F) about 15 minutes.
Remove to wire racks.
While still warm, spread half the cookies with confectioners' sugar icing.
