Turkey Shepherd'S Pie Recipe Video
Shepherd’s Pie is an English dish, traditionally made with lamb. I like to make mine a little on the healthier side and use ground turkey. My Shepherd’s Pie is essentially a casserole, lined with cooked turkey and vegetables, topped with sweet potatoes, and baked.
Here is my basic recipe for a simple Turkey Shepherd’s Pie.
Ingredients
2 lbs ground turkey
1 large onion, chopped
3 carrots, peeled and chopped
3 celery stalks chopped
1 cup tomato sauce
1 package frozen peas
3 large sweet potatoes
1 cup fat free milk
dash hot sauce
olive oil
Salt, pepper, other seasonings of choice
Directions
Peel and quarter potatoes, boil in salted water until fork tender.
While the potatoes are cooking, add oil in a medium high heat, nonstick skillet. Brown ground turkey. Once cooked set aside. Retain the liquid with the cooked ground turkey.
Add some more oil to skillet and sauté onions, until translucent. Add carrots and celery in with the onions. Return ground turkey to skillet and add tomato sauce. Add your desired spices and fold in frozen peas. Cook an additional 10 minutes.
Mash potatoes in bowl, add splash of hot sauce and season to taste. Add milk till desired consistency, smooth enough to be able to spread over turkey mixture.
Place turkey and vegetable mixture in baking dish. Distribute mashed sweet potatoes evenly on top.
Bake in preheated 375*F oven until bubbling and brown (about 30 minutes). Remove from oven and let stand 10 minutes.
Makes 6 Servings
