Ingredients
1/2 tablespoon active dry yeast
2 tablespoons warm water (105°-115°F)
1/3 cup milk
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
2-2 1/2 cups flour
1 egg
Confectioners' Icing, if desired
Red food coloring
Shredded coconut, if desired
Glaze
1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water
Directions
1 Dissolve yeast in warm water. Set aside for 5 minutes. Heat milk, butter, sugar, salt, and cardamom to warm (105°€”115°F).
2 Combine 1 1/2 cups flour, yeast mixture, milk mixture, and egg in mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly.
3 Add enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. Knead on lightly floured surface until smooth€”about 10 minutes.
4 Place in greased bowl, turning to coat top. Cover; let rise in warm place until double€”about 1 hour.
5 Punch down dough. Take about % of dough; from 1 piece make a round face. With a second piece, shape Santa's hat tipped to one side. Place on greased baking sheet. Using the remaining third, make: a mouth€”1/2-inch ball; a nose€”1-inch ball; the cheeks€” two 1-inch balls, slightly flattened; a pompom€”2-inch ball; the eyebrows€”two 3/4-inch ropes; a mustache€”two 1 1/2-inch oval shapes, slightly flattened; the trim for the hat€”two 6-inch long ropes, twisted together and placed above eyebrows; and a beard€” with remaining dough make a triangle shape under mouth. Make glaze and brush on loaf.
6 Cover; let rise in a warm place about 15 minutes. Do not let rise too long€”dough will lose its shape when baking. Bake in a preheated 350°F oven about 30 minutes or until done. Cool on wire rack.
7 If desired, make Confectioners' Icing. Use 1 drop of red coloring to make face pink. Use a little more red for deeper pink on mouth, nose, and cheeks. Use enough coloring to produce bright red for hat. For the rest (pompom, beard, mustache, eyebrows, and hat trim), frost with white. Use coconut if desired.
