Sandwich Squares Recipe

Ingredients

 
1 cup sifted flour
 
1 teaspoon soda
 
2 cups quick-cooking oats
 
1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
 
3/4 cup melted butter
 
1 package (7 ounces) dates, finely cut
 
1 tablespoon flour
 
1 cup water
 
1 package (1 cup) semi-sweet chocolate morsels
 
1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions

Sift together flour and soda.
Add oats, brown sugar and melted butter and blend well.
Spread half of this mixture in a greased, 12 by 8 by 2-inch pan.
Combine dates, flour and water and chocolate morsels in a saucepan.
Cook over low heat, stir- ring until thick, about 10 minutes.
Stir in vanilla.
Spread over mixture in pan.
Sprinkle remaining oat mixture over choco- late layer.
Press down.
Bake in a moderately-hot oven (375° F) 20 minutes.
