Red Velvet Cake became very popular in the US in the 1950's. The acidic reaction of vinegar and buttermilk is what makes the flavour so wonderful. There are actually 3 different recipe versions for red velvet cake. I use to make it for the kids for birthday parties-whoops! Be cautious about serving this to children!!!! Unless you wantto be ulling them off the ciling as Red Food Colouring is known to cause hyper-activity (ADHD) in some children. Also special care mstbe made that the red food colouring is infact safe. o agoogle on this subject and you will read of tis healthy concern. One time we allowed our grandson to have red coloured juice and some candy-uh-oh poor kid was bouncing off walls and couldn't stop for hours. Even the red food colouring in tandoori items can be a problem. Shanti/Mary-Anne
