Red onion chutney Recipe

This chutney is a very good combination for idly and dosa.

Ingredients

 
To Grind :
 
1/2 tsp jeera ( jeeragam )
 
1 pinch asafoetida powder
 
6 dry red chillies
 
3/4 tsp salt
 
1 marble size tamarind piece
 
2 count tomatoes
 
3/4 count chopped red onion
 
To Season :
 
2 tsp oil
 
1 tsp mustard seeds
 
1 tsp urad dal
 
some curry leaves
 
2 tsp chopped red onion or 2 chopped small onion

Directions

* First grind jeera, asafoetida powder, dry red chillies, salt, tamarind piece and tomato nicely as a paste without any water.

* Next add the onion and grind it lightly, don't make it in a fine paste.

* Now in a pan season with the said ingrediants and fry the onion for sometime and pour the grind mix and close a lid and boil in medium heat for 10 - 15 mins and remove.

* Good with Idly and dosai.

I also love onion chutney. There is another one that is always bright red and simple but greast taste. I think it is just vinegar, sliced white onions and chile/chili. I must try this recipe of yours. Shanti/Mary-Anne

I think the color of the chutney depends on the color of the onion that we use also the amount of onion that we use. Maybe try little less onion next time.

Hi Jayashree, This chutney is one of my favourite. My grandma makes this onion chutney( 'karupu vengaaya chutney' i used to call like this), I love to add gingerly oil( nallennai) to this and eat with hot idly. But, When i tried making, my chutney looked pinkish and not brown, your recipe sounds exactly the same. I will surely try and see..
