Red Cooked Anise Beef Recipe

Ingredients
2 tablespoons (or more) peanut oil
3 1/2 pounds beef stew meat,patted dry
1 1/2 cups water
1/4 cup soy sauce
3 tablespoons dry Sherry
2 tablespoons sugar
4 slices fresh ginger, minced (about 1/2 to 1 teaspoon)
3 garlic cloves, minced
2 star anise or 2 teaspoons Chinese five spice powder
1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with
1/2 tablespoon cold water
Diagonally sliced green onion (garnish)
Directions
Heat 2 tablespoons oil in wok or dutch oven over medium-high heat until very hot.
Add meat in 4 batches and brown all sides well, adding more oil after each batch if necessary.
Return all meat to wok.
Stir in water, soy sauce, sherry, sugar,ginger, garlic and star anise.
Bring mixture to boil.
Reduce heat, cover and simmer until meat is tender, about 1 1/2 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
Remove meat from wok using slotted spoon.
Skim fat from sauce.
Thicken with cornstarch mixture as desired.
Return meat to wok and blend well.
Garnish each serving with sliced green onion.
