The last time sift directly into large mixing bowl.
Add shortening (room temperature), eggs, and 1/2 cup of the milk.
Stir with a spoon to blend.
Beat with an electric mixer using low speed or by hand with wooden spoon for 2 minutes by the clock.
Scrape sides of bowl twice during beating.
Add the combined vanilla, melted cooled chocolate, soda and water and the remaining milk.
Beat for 2 more minutes.
Pour into two 8-inch layer cake pans with bottoms lined with thin, plain paper.
Bake at 350° F. (moderate) for 20 to 25 minutes or until cake tests done.
Cool 5 minutes before removing from pan.
Turn out on cake coolers to cool thoroughly.
Frost with Mocha Frosting.
