Directions

Cream sugar and shortening.
Dissolve baking soda in hot applesauce and add to sugar and shortening; add salt and mix well.
Sift together dry ingredients sifting 1/2 cup over the fruit and nut mixture.
Fold all together.
Bake in pan lined with brown paper in moderate 325° oven.
Bake 1 hour or more depending on size.
Makes three 4x8 or two 9x5 cakes.
