Light cream - 1 1/2 cups
 
New potatoes - 2 lb, pared and very thinly sliced
 
Salt - 1 12 teaspoons
 
Pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
 
Gruyere cheese - 1 cup, grated (6 0z)

Directions

GETTING READY
1) Preheat oven to 350F.

MAKING
2) In small saucepan, heat cream just until bubbles form around edge of pan.
3) In a 1-1/2-quart shallow baking dish, pour 1/4 cup cream.
4) Arrange one third potatoes in dish; sprinkle with one third salt, dash pepper, and one third cheese; add one third of remaining cream.
5) Repeat twice, using rest of ingredients.
6) In a shallow pan, set the baking dish.
7) Pour hot water to 1-inch level around dish.
8) Bake for 30 minutes, covered.
9) Then bake, uncovered, 1 hour longer, or until potatoes are tender.

SERVING
10) Serve the potatoes au gratin as side dish with meats and vegetables.
