| Shortening or cooking oil for deep fat frying | ||
| 1 egg, lightly beaten | ||
| Port wine | 1 Tablespoon | |
| Cold water | 3 Tablespoon | |
| Vanilla | 1/4 Teaspoon | |
| Melted butter | 2 Teaspoon | |
| Sugar | 2 Tablespoon | |
| Salt | 1/4 Teaspoon | |
| 1 1/2 cups plus 2 tablespoons sifted flour | ||

Directions
Begin heating shortening in a deep fat fryer over low heat; insert deep fat thermometer.
Mix egg, port, water, vanilla, butter, sugar, and salt; sprinkle in flour and mix well.
Turn out on lightly floured board and knead 1 minute just until smooth.
Divide dough in half and roll, one piece at a time, paper thin.
Cut in 2 1/2" squares; make a slit in one corner and pull opposite corner through.
When fat reaches 375° F. drop in filhos, 4 or 5 at a time, and fry about 2 minutes until golden; ' turn them over to brown evenly if they don't flip on their own.
Lift out with a slotted spoon and drain on paper toweling.
Cool, then dredge with confectioners' sugar.
