Ingredients
1 c. sugar
1 c. coffee
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. mace
1 c. chopped dates
1 c. chopped citron
1 tsp. soda
2 c. flour
Directions
Combine sugar, coffee, shortening, salt, cloves, cin- namon, mace, dates and citron in saucepan; boil for 3 minutes.
Cool to lukewarm.
Dissolve soda in 2 tablespoons warm water; add flour and soda mixture to batter, beating well.
Beat together hard.
Bake in 9-inch pan 1 hour at 350 to 375 degrees.
