1/4 cup shortening
 
1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup molasses
 
2 cups sifted flour
 
1/4 teaspoon salt
 
1/4 cup shortening

2 cups sifted flour
 
1/4 teaspoon salt
 
1/4 teaspoon soda
 
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
 
1/2 cup milk
 
1 cup chopped nuts

Directions

Cream together shortening and sugar until light and fluffy.
Beat in egg and molasses.
Sift together flour, salt, soda and bak- ing powder.
Stir into creamed mixture alternately with milk.
Stir in dates and nuts.
Spread in a greased, 8 by 12-inch baking pan.
Bake in a moderate oven (350° F) 25 to 30 minutes.
When cool, cut into bars, 1 by 2 inches
