Plain Strawberry Shortcake Recipe

The plain strawberry shortcake is a simpler and lighter version of the rich strawberry shortcake as it is baked without light cream in the batter. The plain strawberry shortcake has a golden brown top which is usually smothered with whipped cream.

Ingredients

 
2 cups sifted enriched flour
 
1 tablespoon sugar
 
3 teaspoons baking powder
 
1/2 teaspoon salt
 
1/3 cup shortening
 
1 beaten egg
 
2/3 cup milk
 
Soft butter or margarine
 
3 to 4 cups sugared sliced strawberries
 
1 cup heavy cream, whipped

Directions

Sift together dry ingredients; cut in shortening till mixture is like coarse crumbs.
Combine egg and milk; add all at once to dry ingredients, stirring only to moisten.
Big Biscuit Style: Follow method above, except bake shortcake 18 to 20 minutes.Individual
Shortcakes: Follow method above.
