Ingredients

 Sugar2 Teaspoon
 Lukewarm water1 1/4 Cup (16 tbs)
 Dry yeast envelope1
 2 tablespoons soft shortening

 Salt1 1/2 Teaspoon
 All purpose flour3 Cup (16 tbs)

Directions

Add 2 teaspoons sugar to water in mixing bowl.
Dissolve yeast in this water, and let stand 10 minutes.
Add shortening, 2 tablespoons sugar, salt and 1 1/2 cups flour.
Beat 2 minutes in electric mixer at medium speed or 300 strokes by hand.
Scrape sides and bottom of bowl frequently.
Add remaining flour, and beat with spoon until smooth, about 1 1/2 minutes.
Scrape batter from sides of bowl frequently.
Cover bowl with cloth, and let rise in warm place until doubled in bulk, about 1/2 hour.
Beat down, about 25 strokes.
Spread batter evenly in greased 9" x 5" x 3" loaf pan.
Smooth top by patting into shape with floured hands as batter will be sticky.
Let rise in warm place until edge of batter is within 1/4 inch of top of pan, about 40 minutes.
Bake at 375°F. 45—50 minutes.
When baked, remove from pan, and brush top with melted butter or margarine.
Makes 1 loaf.
