Ingredients

 
1/2 pint red wine
 
1/2 pint water
 
4 oz. granulated sugar
 
1 inch piece of cinnamon stick
 
1 strip lemon peel
 
12 pears, peeled
 
8 oz. can of prunes, drained

Directions

Put the wine, water, sugar, cinnamon and lemon peel in a pan.
Remove the eye from the base of each pear but leave the stalks on.
Heat the wine mixture without boiling until the sugar has dissolved.
Add the pears to the pan.
Cover and simmer very slowly for 30 minutes or until tender.
Remove the pears from the pan.
Put them in a serving dish with the prunes.
Boil the wine mixture for a few minutes until it is slightly syrupy.
Strain it over the fruit.
Leave in a cold place until just before serving.
Serve with chilled cream.
