Ingredients
4 Anjou or Bartlett pears, or 5 cooking apples (Winesap, Golden Delicious, or Pippin)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon lemon juice (depending on tartness of fruit)
1/2 cup water
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup unsifted regular all-purpose flour
1/2 cup (14 lb.) butter or margarine
Whipping cream
Directions
Peel and slice the pears or apples into a buttered 9-inch-square baking pan, sprinkle with the spices, and add the lemon juice and water.
Mix the sugar and flour, and work in the butter to make a crumbly mixture.
Spread this over the fruit.
Bake uncovered in a 350° oven about 1 hour, or until the fruit is tender and the crumbly crust is lightly browned.
