Directions

Combine sugar and flour in a saucepan.
Add peaches and cook over a low heat, stirring constantly, until fruit is tender (takes about 5 minutes, depending on the variety and quality of the fruit).
Pour into an 8 inch square pan, dot with butter, and sprinkle with cinnamon.
Set aside.
Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt.
Pinch in butter with your finger tips until well distributed.
With a fork, stir in milk (just enough to make a soft dough), transfer to a lightly floured board, and knead a second or two.
Roll into a 9 inch square about 1/2 inch thick.
Place 6n top of the peaches, pinching dough to rim of pan.
Bake in a preheated 425° oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until nicely browned.
Work bread crumbs and butter together and pat a third of the mixture on the bottom of a buttered baking dish.
Cover with half the apples.
Mix together sugar, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and lemon rind.
Sprinkle half the mixture over the apple.
Add half the lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of water.
Add another layer of crumbs.
Repeat with apples, sugar mixture, lemon juice, and water.
Sprinkle remaining crumbs on top, cover, and bake in a preheated 350° oven for 40 minutes.
Remove cover and continue baking at 400° for 10 minutes.
