Ingredients
4 c. sifted all- purpose flour
1 3/4 tsp. salt
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 1/4 tsp. ginger
1 1/4 tsp. cloves
1 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1 1/4 c. shortening
1 1/4 c. sugar
1 3/4 tsp. soda
1 1/4 c. unsulphured molasses
2 eggs
1 1/4 c. buttermilk
Directions
Sift flour, salt, baking powder and spices together.
Cream shortening, sugar and soda; blend in molasses.
Stir in 1/2 cup flour mixture.
Beat in eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Add butter- milk alternately with remaining flour mixture.
Beat for 30 seconds.
Turn into greased and floured baking pan.
Bake in 350-degree oven for 50 minutes.
Cool; cut into squares.
Top with whipped cream and apple- sauce if desired.
