Oven Swiss Steak Recipe
Oven swiss steak is a semi cooked and semi roasted steak that is prepared along with vegetables. Browned with shortening, the beef is roasted with a vegetables like celery , carrots and onions and served with a sprinkling of melted American cheese on top.
Ingredients
1/2 to 3/4 pound boneless beef round steak 3/4 inch thick
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 8 ounce can (1 cup) stewed tomatoes
1/4 cup chopped celery
1/4 cup chopped carrot
1 tablespoon chopped onion
1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons shredded sharp process American cheese
Directions
Cut meat into 2 portions.
Mix flour and salt; pound into meat; set aside remaining flour.
Brown meat in small amount of hot shortening.
Place meat in small shallow baking dish.
Blend remaining flour with drippings in skillet.
Add remaining ingredients, except cheese, and cook, stirring constantly, till mixture boils.
Pour over meat.
Cover and bake in moderate oven (350°) 2 hours or till meat and vegetables are tender.
Sprinkle cheese over meat.
Return to oven for few minutes.
