Toast 4 slices sandwich-style rye bread on one side.
Divide and spread 1/2 pound lean ground beef on untoasted side of bread, spreading to edges.
Sprinkle with salt.
Broil 3 inches from heat, 5 to 6 minutes.
Top each sandwich with 1 thin slice onion and 2 thin slices tomato.
Broil 2 minutes more; remove from broiler.
Halve 2 slices mozzarella cheese (3 ounces); place cheese slices atop sandwiches.
Return sandwiches to broiler till cheese melts.
