Old-Fashioned Spice Cake Recipe

Ingredients
2 1/4 cups sifted Swans Down Cake Flour
1 teaspoon Calumet Baking Powder
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon cloves
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
Pinch of black pepper
3/4 cup shortening
3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
3 eggs, unbeaten
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla
Directions
Sift flour, baking powder, salt, soda, spices, and pepper together.
Cream shortening thoroughly.
Gradually add sugars and cream together until light and fluffy.
Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each.
Add flour alternately with buttermilk.
Beat after each addition until smooth.
Add vanilla.
Pour batter into three 8-inch layer pans or two 9-inch layer pans which have been lined on bottoms with paper.
Bake in moderate oven (350°F.) 25 to 30 minutes for the 8-inch layers and 30 to 35 minutes for the 9-inch layers.
Frost with a butter cream frosting.
