Old Fashioned Marble Cake Recipe

Ingredients
Light part:
1/2 cup butter 125 mL
1 1/2 cups white sugar 375 mL
2 1/2 cups all purpose flour 625 mL
1/2 tsp soda 2 mL
1 tsp cream of tartar 5 mL
1/2 cup milk 125 mL
4 egg whites
Dark part:
1/2 cup butter 125 mL
1 cup brown sugar 250 mL
1/2 cup molasses or maple syrup 125 mL
4 egg yolks
2 1/2 cups all purpose flour 625 mL
1/2 tsp soda 2 mL
1 tsp cream of tartar 5 mL
1/2 tbs each of cloves, allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg 7 mL
1/2 cup sour milk 125 mL
Directions
Cream butter, add sugar and cream together.
Measure sifted flour and sift" again with soda and cream Of tartar.
Add to creamed mixture alternately with the milk.
Beat well and fold in beaten egg whites.
Cream butter, add sugar and molasses or maple syrup and continue creaming.
Add egg yolks and beat well.
Measure flour and sift with soda, cream of tartar and spices.
Add alternately with sour milk to first mixture.
Beat well.
Drop alternate spoonfuls of light and dark batter into greased layer cake pans.
Bake for 50 minutes at 350F (180C).
