 1/2 cup sweet milk
 Egg whites4 (Light part:)

 Brown sugar1 Cup (16 tbs) (Dark Part:)
 1/2 cup molasses or maple syrup
 Egg yolks4 (Dark Part:)
 Flour2 1/2 Cup (16 tbs), sifted (Dark Part:)
 Soda1/2 Teaspoon (Dark Part:)
 Cream of tartar1 Teaspoon (Dark Part:)
 1/2 tbs. each of cloves, allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg
 Sour milk1/2 Cup (16 tbs) (Dark Part:)

Directions

Cream butter, add sugar and cream together.
Measure sifted flour and sift again with soda and cream of tartar.
Add to creamed mixture alternately with the milk.
Beat well and fold in beaten egg whites.
Cream butter, add sugar and molasses or maple syrup and continue creaming.
Add egg yolks and beat well.
Measure sifted flour and sift again with soda, cream of tartar and spices.
Add alternately with sour milk to first mixture.
Beat well.
Drop alternate spoonfuls of light and dark batter and bake at 350 F.
