2 quarts water

1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/4 cup molasses

Cover with 2 quarts water.

Drain, reserving 1 1/2 cups liquid; set beans aside.

Layer half of beans, onion, bacon, and molasses mixture in a 3-quart casserole; repeat layers.
