Old Fashioned Spice Cookies Recipe

Ingredients
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1 cup soft vegetable shortening
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
2 tablespoons water
2 cups uncooked rolled oats, quick or old-fashioned
3/4 cup currants
Confectioners' sugar
Directions
1. Blend flour, salt, baking soda, and spices in a bowl. Add shortening, sugars, egg, and water; beat with electric mixer until smooth (about 2 minutes). Stir in oats and currants.
2. Chill dough thoroughly.
3. Roll only a small portion of chilled dough at a time to 1/8 inch thickness on a pastry canvas or board lightly sprinkled with confectioners' sugar. Cut with a floured 3-inch round cutter. Put onto ungreased cookie sheets. Sprinkle with granulated sugar.
4. Bake at 375°F 8 to 10 minutes.
