Old Fashioned Baked Beans Recipe
Old fashioned baked beans is a navy beans and salt pork recipe prepared in the oven. A baked recipe, the old fashioned baked beans is prepared with molasses and mustard to taste. savory and delicious, it is best served with mashed potatoes on the side.
Ingredients
2 cups navy beans
1/4 pound salt pork, sliced
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup granulated or brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
2 tablespoons molasses
1 small onion, quartered
Directions
Wash beans; cover with water and soak overnight.
Cook slowly until skins burst or until just tender.
Drain, reserving liquid.
Place half the beans in bean pot or Dutch oven.
Bury part of pork in beans; combine remaining ingredients and add half.
Add remaining beans and seasonings.
Place remaining salt pork over top.
Cover with bean liquid.
Cover and bake in slow oven (250° to 300°) or bury Dutch oven in campfire coals 6 to 8 hours.
If necessary, add more liquid.
