Old English Wassail Recipe

Ingredients
3 cans (12 ounces each) ale
3/4 to 1 cup sugar
10 thin strips lemon peel
3 whole cloves
3 whole allspice
1. small cinnamon stick
1 small whole nutmeg, cracked (optional)
1 1/2 cups dry sherry
Small baked apples or lemon slices (optional)
Directions
1. Pour 1 can of ale into a heat-resistant glass punch bowl. Stir in sugar, lemon peel and spices. Heat uncovered in microwave oven to simmering (3 to 4 minutes at High).
2. Stir in sherry and remaining ale. Heat uncovered in microwave oven to serving temperature (about 10 minutes at High, or if using Temperature Probe, set at 160°F and at High).
3. Stir wassail. Remove spices and peel. If desired, float small baked apples or lemon slices in wassail.
