Brown Oatmeal Bread Recipe
Ingredients
| Boiling water | 2 Cup (16 tbs) | |
| Oatmeal | 1 Cup (16 tbs), uncooked | |
| Molasses | 1/2 Cup (16 tbs) | |
| Salt | 2 Teaspoon | |
| 1 tablespoon butter, shortening or margarine | ||
| 1 package dry granular yeast | ||
| Lukewarm water | 1/2 Cup (16 tbs) | |
| Flour | 5 Cup (16 tbs), sifted | |
| Extra butter or margarine for greasing bread pans | ||
Directions
1. Pour the boiling water over the oatmeal and let stand 1 hour. Then add the molasses, salt and butter, shortening or margarine.
2. Moisten yeast in the lukewarm water and add to the oatmeal mixture, mixing well. Add the flour and beat thoroughly. Cover the dough with a clean cloth and let rise in a warm, not hot, place until double in bulk, about 2 1/2 hours. Again beat dough thoroughly.
3. Grease 2 loaf pans and pour the dough into them. Let rise again, about 1 hour.
4. Start oven, set at Moderately Hot, 400° F. Bake 20 minutes, then reduce the heat to Moderate, 350° F. and bake about 40 minutes longer, or until the tops are delicately browned.
