 Shortening1/3 Cup (16 tbs)
 Brown sugar1 Cup (16 tbs), firmly packed
 1 egg, unbeaten
 Vanilla extract1 Teaspoon
 Walnuts1 Cup (16 tbs), chopped
 Semi-sweet chocolate1 7 Ounce
 All purpose flour1 Cup (16 tbs)
 Baking powder1/2 Teaspoon
 Baking soda1/8 Teaspoon
 Salt1/4 Teaspoon

Directions

Work shortening with a spoon until fluffy and creamy, then add sugar gradually, while continuing to work with a spoon until light.
Add egg, vanilla, nuts, chocolate, and sifted dry ingredients, and mix thoroughly.
Spread in a greased or oiled pan about 12" x.8" x 1" and bake in moderate oven of 350°F for 30 min., or until done.
While still warm, cut into 20 bars.
