Ingredients

 
1-2 cups flour
 
1/2 tablespoon active dry yeast
 
1/4 cup nonfat dry milk
 
1/2 teaspoon salt
 
2 tablespoons sugar
 
1/3 cup hot water (120°-130°F)
 
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
 
1 egg
 
1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
 
Glaze
 
1 egg yolk, beaten with 1 tablespoon milk

Directions

1 Combine 1 cup flour, yeast, dry milk, salt, sugar, and hot water in mixing bowl. Add butter, egg, and cardamom. Mix thoroughly.
2 Add enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. Knead on lightly floured surface until smooth€”about 10 minutes.
3 Place in greased bowl, turning to coat top. Cover; let rise in warm place until double€”about 1 hour.
4 Punch down dough. Divide dough into thirds, making 3 ropes. Braid. Place in greased 5 x 9-inch loaf pan.
5 Cover; let rise in warm place until double€”about 30 minutes.
6 Make glaze and brush on loaf. Bake in a preheated 350°F oven 30€” 40 minutes or until done. Cool on wire rack.
